Vigilantes destroy mobile phone Antennas

Bookmarklets | MOVABLE TYPE Vow ! Via silicon.com : "The destruction of a mobile phone mast in the West Midlands has led to concern that campaigners against mobile phone base stations are increasingly taking matters into their own hands, and could hamper the rollout of third-generation (3G) mobile services. The base station, at Wishaw near Sutton Coldfield, was pulled down in the early hours of 6 November. It has been sited there for a decade, and people living nearby blame it on a number of cases of serious illnesses in the area."

Mobile phone masts are also blamed for missing pigeons

peak oil

Association for the Study of Peak Oil. "World oil and gas supplies are heading for a "production crunch" sometime between 2010 and 2020 when they cannot meet supply, because global reserves are 80 per cent smaller than had been thought, new forecasts suggest. Global oil production would peak in the first decade of the 21st century and decline forever thereafter. There is no adequate substitute for oil energy. The peaking of production means the further growth of energy demand, and thus of the global capitalist economy, is physically impossible. No energy - no economy"

about competitive intelligence and foresight research

Bookmarklets | MOVABLE TYPE I had a very nice meeting with bill cockayne at Create/PSE about competitive intelligence and foresight research. He gave me few references and places to check :

International Conference on Competitive Intelligence Check dependent and independent groups Articles sometimes in the NYT Harvard Business Review Mc Kinsey (journal) CIO CIO insights (Best practices...) Financial Times the economist wall street journal

Boutique Skandia (finnish company) i could work in big french insurance companies :) or IBM cambridge research group :)

Collecting bank and industry reports In the US, big companies spun out their research groups, as well as their foresights groups. Only Venture capitalists keep them

Big companies needs : from very specific issues to broad ones.

Lots of people work 10years for a company (big one) and then spin off to have their own intelligence company.

It is not only a matter of writing reports, the idea is to give the client a global framework that could help them to understand the phenomenon now and in the future. -> FIND PATTERNS !

In your domain, have strongs opinions ! find added values, drawbacks and possible error you can have made in your prediction (and predict which kind of information could foster an error in the future : if event X arrive, that could modify my thinking)

scam from russia !

Bookmarklets | MOVABLE TYPE Now there is scam from Russia ! "If you have any old warm clothes, warm blankets, electric heater or portable stove, high-calories food, vitamins, medicaments against cold, any hygiene-products, I will be very grateful to you if you could send it to our postal address " Dear Friend,

Please excuse me for the inconvience caused by this message.

My name is Valentin. I'm a student and I live with my mother in the city of Kaluga, Russia, that is 200km south from Moscow. My mother is invalid. She cannot see and she receives pension from government very rare which is not enough even for medications.

I work very hard every day to be able to take care of my mother, but my salary is very small, because my studies still not finished. Due to the crisis our authorities recently stoped gas in our district. Now we cannot heat our home without gas. I don't know what to do, because the winter is coming and the temperature in the street can be lower than minus 20 degrees Celsius. I'm very afraid that the temperature inside our home can be very cold and we will not be able to survive.

Our only chance to survive is to use the free access to internet at our local library when it is possible. I have found several e-mail addresses, including yours, that is why I have decided to appeal to you with a prayer in my heart for a small help.

If you have any old warm clothes, warm blankets, electric heater or portable stove, high-calories food, vitamins, medicaments against cold, any hygiene-products, I will be very grateful to you if you could send it to our postal address which is:

Valentin Mihailin, Ryleeva Street, 6-45. Kaluga. 248030, Russia.

If you think that it would be better or easier for you to help with some money, please write me back and I will give you details for sending it safely if you agree. This way to help is very good because the necessities here are not very expensive.

I hope to hear from you very soon and I pray that you will be able to help us to survive this winter. I also hope very much that this hard situation will get better very soon in our country.

I wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year 2004. I'm sending to you many thanks in advance for your kind understanding. Please excuse me, once more, for any inconvience I could cause you by sending this message.

God Bless You

Valentin and my mother Elena. Kaluga. Russia.

ipod jacking!

stuff-jacking is very trendy nowadays : I talked about bluejacking several days ago. Now, there is another concept : ipodjacking : "a few iPod owners have developed a little ritual in which they recognize each other from the headphones, stop, plug into each other's iPods, and share their music for a minute." -> people could listen in on each other's music without first making contact. : "If both parties are clearly enjoying their music the headphone jack is unplugged and offered to the other person. We then stand and listen to each other's music for a minute or so, unjack, thank the other person and move on..."

biotagging

Bookmarklets | MOVABLE TYPE It's cool to study tags and localization about people but others are already tagging proteins :)

"Protein A tagging is a commonly used tool for characterizing and localizing yeast NPC proteins (nucleoporins). By preembedding antiprotein A immunogold electron microscopy (immunogold EM), we have localized two yeast nucleoporins, Nsp1p and Nic96p, in mutant yeast strains recombinantly expressing these nucleoporins tagged with four (Nsp1p) or two (Nic96p) IgG"

ghetto blaster

Bookmarklets | MOVABLE TYPE Bass Station is a community-based information space that aims to provides a service for the exchange and distribution of a community's works. The form they chose to embody this idea is the Ghettoblaster.

The most ghetto fabulous WiFi HiFi yet: an old school boom box called the Bass-Station that's been refitted with 802.11b, a 120GB hard drive, and an MP3 decoder, and that is controlled using a web browser. Besides being able to play MP3s, it can also stream audio to other devices in its local area network, double as a file-server for file-sharing. Sure to come in handy for our next breakdancing battle.

area digits

In the old time (you know before...), we were used to rely on area code in order to locate people thanks to their phone number. For instance, I remenber that instead of learning my parents' complete phone number, I just learn the four last digits : 11 43 because all the others were the same for the locality. An at the time, I did not anybody outside my country I did not learn my international code as well. And the numbers evolved : +33 4 77 60 11 43 33 is the international 2 digit 4 is because my parents live in the fourth quadrant of france 77 is the code for the department 'La Loire' 60 is the code for our city -> I just learnt the 11 43

Now we don't have to learn, the cell phone has a memory, we could just notice the fact that the ultimate area code is the one devoted to phone numbers : in france it is 06 13 or 06 14, in switzerland it is 078 or 079. Those number are connected to the virtual realm of cell phones...
