Skateboarding, Architecture and Space

I am definitely convinced that my early interests (teenagers' stuff) are still linked to my research. or my passion to urban "dérive/drift". I found this reference : Borden, I. (2001) Skateboarding, space and the city: architecture and the body, Berg, New York.

I always thought that skateboarding (I used to skate) was a way to discover cities by hanging out on various spots, selecting the best spots...

Skatboarding (and its culture) is definitely urban-related !!! Skateboarders are an increasingly common feature of the urban environment-recent estimates total 40 million world-wide. We are all aware of their often extraordinary talent and manoeuvres on the city streets. This book is the first detailed study of the urban phenomenon of skateboarding. It looks at skateboarding history from the surf-beaches of California in the 1950s, through the purpose-built skateparks of the 1970s, to the street-skating of the present day and shows how skateboarders experience and understand the city through their sport. Dismissive of authority and convention, skateboarders suggest that the city is not just a place for working and shopping but a true pleasure-ground, a place where the human body, emotions and energy can be expressed to the full.

The huge skateboarding subculture that revolves around graphically-designed clothes and boards, music, slang and moves provides a rich resource for exploring issues of gender, race, class, sexuality and the family. As the author demonstrates, street-style skateboarding, especially characteristic of recent decades, conducts a performative critique of architecture, the city and capitalism. Anyone interested in the history and sociology of sport, urban geography or architecture will find this book riveting.

Henri Lefebvre : All interact in social spatializations

Bookmarklets | MOVABLE TYPE "What exactly is the mode of existence of social relationships? ...The study of space offers an answer according to which he social relations of production have a social existence to the extent that they have a spatial existence; they project themselves into a space, becoming inscribed there, and in the process producing that space itself. Failing this, these relations would remain in the realm of ‘pure’ abstraction - that is to say, in the realm of representations and hence of ideology: the realm of verbalism, verbiage and empty words" (Lefebvre, 1991:129).

"It is a question of discovering or developing a unity of theory between fields which are given as being separate,...Which fields?...First, the physical, nature, the cosmos, - then the mental (which is comprised of logic and formal abstraction), - finally the social. In other words, this search concerns logico-epistemological space - the space of social practices, - that in which sensible phenomena are situated in, not excluding the imaginary, projects and projections, symbols, utopias" (Lefebvre 1974:19).

About mobile studies

Bookmarklets | MOVABLE TYPE Mizuko Ito seems to be a very smart researcher working in the field of cultural anthropology (specialized in studies of media technology use).

Her work deals with how people use the Internet, computer games, and other digital media, particularly in special interest and fan groups that are highly targeted and personalized.

Her studies on Japanese Technoculture and Mobile Phones is particulary worthy regarding my interests.

CSCL 2003 : a brief report

Bookmarklets | MOVABLE TYPE The CSCL 2003 conference was termed "Designing for change in networked learning environments". One can discriminate three main different axis regarding the contributions :

. integrated learning : different approaches using embedded technologies in face-to-face learning scenarios (like using PDAs to display and annotate slides, or for voting/quizz/brainstorming for instance).

. the design and the analyses of group interaction is a very active field, dealt with various approaches like Social Network Analysis, studies of non-verbal signs, argumentation, perspective-taking, and so on.

. metadata are now rather focused on contents, activitis, interaction. There is much more emphasis put on collaborative and cooperative aspects of learning.

There was also more political discussion concerning the relationships between the CSCL community and the International Society of Learning Science (ISLS). The CSCL will now be embedded as a part of the ISLS.

Experiment

Bookmarklets | MOVABLE TYPE I am trying to find ideas for a short exploratory experiment concerning spatial grounding and SMS. I think I am going to ask a group of young hipster in Lausanne if they want to participate (I can pay them :).

The idea is to investigate the way they represent the psistion of their parners among a group...

moblogging for what ?

fab asked me about the use of mobile blogging... is it really useful ? I think it could help for just in time blogging...to post quick thoughts (or a reminder like a post it), especially if we consider the nano/microdocument format of this kind of post. The fact that you can also send pictures (or maybe audio comments in the future) is also interesting. Additionally, group moblogging could be a possibility for field research/acitivities (for children who explore a museum for instance, collecting cues about a specific topic, writing a we-blog with their impressions, pictures...).

-> moblogging sounds nice for individual knowledge management as well as collaborative activities (smart scenarios are yet to be created BUT I do have few ideas about that)

Mobile scenarios to be developped

· Something that would allow people to display the social network that connect them to... their work-team ? · analysis of the movements will give us an idea of many social patterns : group configuration, group migrations, preferences of sectors in buildings… · . .

do technology suck ?

Skills2learn .:;

experimental psychology methods, quantitative/qualitative analysis, social network analysis, literature about space/cognition/collaboration, literature about cognition theories (distributed cognition, activity theory, socio-cultural perspectives...), literature about awareness, programming (C or python script as well as visualization in order to analyse research stuff), design (ethnographic studies, use of scenarios namely)... cool program .:;

Count Zero (William Gibson)

William Gibson's Count Zero : two worlds/spaces collide : the mystic, organic world of Haitian Voudoun, and the detached, cool, mechanical world of the matrix/infosphere -> two different virtual spaces... How can this be related to my stuff ???

It's just a metaphor :)

Thoughts about awareness
