📝 Weeknote: une semaine académique – encore une fois – avec un saut de deux jours à Bergen en Norvège pour participer au jury de thèse de Albert Cheng-Syun Tang. Son travail de recherche en design croise design critique et design d'interaction pour proposer une réflexion critique sur les enjeux de surveillance et de consumérisme avec les objets connectés. Si le projet était intéressant et bien mené, j'ai aussi découvert un modèle inédit de soutenance de thèse; laquelle s'est en fait effectuée en deux temps : le premier en mars dernier a consisté a visiter une exposition des projets interactifs de Tang, puis à en débattre pendant deux jours et demi avec mes collègues du jury (Matt Malpass et Dóra Ísleifsdóttir) pour en tirer une analyse de dix pages. Le tout sans contact aucun avec le candidat. Celui-ci nous a envoyé il y a deux mois un document de 150 pages décrivant sa "Critical Reflection", que nous avons lu afin d'amender notre document d'analyse de son travail. La seconde étape, vendredi matin, a consisté en une présentation de Tang pendant 45 minutes, suivant d'une heures de questions de la part du jury. Une formule intéressante pour les thèses en design (et en art) qui passent par la pratique (recherche-création).

📝 Weeknote: a rather academic week - once again - with a quick hop to Bergen, Norway in order to participate in the Albert Cheng-Syun Tang thesis jury. His work in design research combined critical design and interaction design to propose a critical reflection on the issues of surveillance and consumerism with networked objects. While the project was highly interesting and well carried out, I also discovered a new model of thesis defence; which was in fact carried out in two phases: the first (last March) consisted in visiting an exhibition of Tang's interactive projects, then discussing them during two and a half days with my colleagues of the jury (Matt Malpass and Dóra Ísleifsdóttir) to draw an analysis of ten pages. All without any contact with the candidate. Two months ago, he sent us a 150-page document describing his "Critical Reflection", which we read in order to amend our document analyzing his work. The second phase, Friday morning, consisted of a (great) presentation made by Tang for 45 minutes, following an hour of questions from the jury. An interesting format for theses that relies on practice-based research approaches.
